The Advantages of a Business Marketing Plan

By Ross Lincoln Business is an important form of investment where it primarily targets sales and profits. Most people who are putting up a business can either succeed or fail. However, failures can be prevented or minimized if you make a precise business marketing plan. Review the following advantages and take the initiative to incorporate it in your business. 1. It unites you and your employees to a common goal. A business marketing plan will give your employees something to achieve. Being the head of the business, you are igniting self confidence in them to do their best, to support the company’s marketing goal, and to gain success within a specified time. Most companies failed because of underestimating the marketing plan impacts. Remember, your employees also wanted to feel that they are part of the team. Nothing can compare to the sense of fulfillment that they experience when they are also engaged in a complicated yet exciting joint endeavor. Your employees will become more committed to the company if you share your vision with them. They might not always understand about financial projections but a business marketing plan that is written well will do miracles. 2. It will help you follow a definite path to success. It is a fact that business without market plans for at least 5 to 10 years increases the danger of failures. Business marketing plans helps you to study accurately the different market conditions. In return, business problem solutions were already prepared if ever something goes wrong. But remember, you cannot successfully make a marketing plan without involving other people. No matter how small your business is, obtain feedbacks from the different segments of the company. It includes manufacturing, finance, supply, and others. Your employees can give realistic input on the things that are easier to achieve, potential marketing opportunities that are not yet realized, and new planning dimensions. Make sure to reach out for your employees. 3. It prepares ready made instructions for the entire operation of the company. The business marketing plan is your chronological guide for running your company successfully. The whole structure of the company is being assessed in a manner that every part is working efficiently and effectively. It also envisions the company’s status in the future. 4. The business marketing plan acts as a written agreement between you and your employees on what to do today and in the coming years. It will contain all the recorded financial reports and the whole marketing layouts. So, in case one of your employee leaves or a new employee arrives, the goal still remain intact. 5. The business marketing plan gives you exact basis of business reflection. Competition today is very tight. Without a ready made plan, it will be difficult to survive business rivalries. What more if you are going to deal with the things that are not related directly to the business daily operation, yet it gives you headaches. To create the best plan, it should be thoroughly studied and reviewed. Well, other businessmen even find a place where they feel comfortable and relaxed to make accurate sketches of their business ventures. The success of your business starts with a good business marketing plan and gets its profit in the end. It will help you stay stable besides any business change, customer preference, market evolution, and employees leaving your company. Ross Lincoln makes it quicker and easier for you to create profitable business ideas, develop your marketing strategy or start brainstorming on any topic. Gastric Bypass: Remembering Surgery 6 Years Later

By Kaye Bailey September 13, 1999 Do you remember where you were six years ago today? I do. It was the day I underwent gastric bypass surgery a day that changed my life forever. I dont recall much about that day. I remember feeling embarrassed lying on the preparation table, my enormous belly exposed to be cleansed antiseptically. I remember feeling frightened, but calm with a total acceptance that gastric bypass surgery was the best decision for me. I remember the anesthesiologist, a beautiful woman, not very old and not very big. Then I went to sleep. I woke up puking violently, an unpleasant reaction to anesthesia. I didnt have my glasses so things were blurry, particularly the flowers from my husband. And I can remember a push-button device that helped me sleep. Later that night I realized I was not yet smaller. In fact my stomach was bloated and sore. In my drug induced vagueness I became convinced the surgeon had mistakenly done the wrong operation because I was getting bigger, not smaller. The day after surgery my surgeon visited me, taught me to drink tiny sips of water, patted my hand and told me I was going to do just fine. I remember walking around the hospital hallway. I remember a female nurse bathing me. I remember a very good-looking male nurse he didnt bathe me. Rats! I remember drinking some nasty liquid chalk and getting an x-ray to confirm my stomach had been whacked, stapled and bypassed. I remember the super-sized wheel chair and being embarrassed that it fit just fine. I remember being discharged from the hospital to spend the next several days in a hotel room because we had traveled a great distance for my last resort surgery. I watched Mame on TBS several times. The sofa at the hotel was scratchy. My husband and I went on outings each day, little drives around a strange town. He emptied my surgical drain for me. I thought it was disgusting. One week after surgery we went to Sea World where I wept in profound disbelief at the great whales circling the pool and performing flawlessly for a bite of fish. Being from out-of-town, we sat in the Splash Zone. Turns out those warnings are for a reason. The great swimming mammal whacked his tail and we were drenched! On Thursday of the second week Leslie, the darling nurse and counselor herself a WLS patient, removed my drain. We could go home. She asked me the four rules and I repeated them to her. She told me, Take advantage of this window of opportunity. Learn everything you can. If you dont learn early to follow the rules and take care of yourself you can regain this weight. Starry eyed and hopeful we packed ourselves in the car and headed for home. Almost 1,500 miles later we pulled into the driveway of home sweet home. My fabulous husband said to me, Welcome to your new life You Have Arrived. Jesus Christ: The Ultimate Gift

By Nevada York For there is born to you this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ, the Lord (Luke 2:11). Every year during Christmas, the world is reminded of the sacrifice of Jesus Christ. On Christmas day, we exchange gifts in celebration of Christs birth. In addition to laying down His life for our sins, are there other gifts Jesus gave to mankind? Through the precious sacrifice of His life, three extraordinary gifts were set in motion: Jesus became our Mediator between God and Man, the Holy Spirit began dwelling in the believers of Christ, and Jesus gave us the authority to use His name. But now He has obtained a more excellent ministry, inasmuch as He is also Mediator of a better covenant, which was established on better promises (Hebrews 8:6). Christ said in the Gospel of John that He is the only way; no man can go to the Father except through Him. A mediator is the middle person mediating between two other persons who are at enmity with each other. During the Old Covenant, ordinances had to be followed in order for the high priest to come into the presence of God. Under the New Covenant, Jesus became our mediator to God. The necessity of Jesus mediating on our behalf is explained very clearly in Hebrews, Therefore He is able also to save to the uttermost (completely, perfectly, finally, and for all time and eternity) those who come to God through Him, since He is always living to make petition to God and intercede with Him and intervene for them (Hebrew 7:25). After the death of Christ, we no longer needed those ritualistic ordinances of the Old Testament. Jesus is the Everlasting High Priest who mediates with God on our behalf. Only through the atonement of His blood, can salvation be gained. One of the most important gifts given after the death of Jesus Christ is the gift of Holy Spirit. Before ascending into Heaven, Jesus commanded His disciples not to leave Jerusalem until they received the Promise of the Father, But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth (Acts1:8). The outpouring of this precious gift, recorded in Acts Chapter 2, is known as the Day of Pentecost. Immediately after the Apostles received the Holy Spirit, they were given the ability to speak in tongues and prophesy. When instructing Christians not to defile the dwelling place of the Holy Spirit, Apostle Paul posed a rhetorical question to the followers of Jesus, Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own 1st Cor. 6:19. The Holy Spirit dwells within Christians. According to the Dictionary of the Bible, The Holy Spirit is God, a Person within the Godheadbut above all it is the Spirit that reproduces in man the moral character of Godthough the Spirit is still an influence rather than a personality. For this reason, Christians must not give into sin, let alone sins (e.g., fornication and adultery) that are against your temple (body) because it is possible to grieve the Holy Spirit who dwells in us (Ephesians 4:30). After His amazing triumph over death, Jesus told His Apostles, Behold, I give you the authority to trample on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy, and nothing shall by any means hurt you (Luke 10:19). Be it praying, rebuking, or casting out evil spirits, the name of Jesus is the authoritative tool during spiritual warfare. Im sure you have heard, there is power in the name of Jesus. In my opinion, one should always remember to call on Him during a time of trouble, for Acts 4:12 unequivocally states, And there is salvation in and through no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by and in which we must be saved. The A.C.L.U. and other organizations have taken great strides to rid our society of Christmas, rip every visage of Jesus and the Bible. It makes one realize that there is something about the name of Jesus that elicits a reaction. Therefore God exalted Him to the highest place and gave Him the name that is above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father (Philippians 2: 9-11). Though it may appear that the A.C.L.U and other organizations are succeeding in their immoral mission, but the bottom line is that one day in the futureevery single person will have to bow at the name of Jesus. Jesus, our Mediator, died and rose from the dead; His Father sent the Holy Spirit unto His followers; and Jesus name, the name above all names, gives us the ability to stand against the raging storms of life. Jesus said, “I am the light of the world. He who follows Me shall not walk in darkness, but have the light of life. (John 8:12) During Christmas, please remember the gifts given through the death of Christ. Why should you stumble in darkness when you can follow the Light of the world who has proven that He loved you since the beginning of time? Come to know Jesus. Birthday Flower Arrangements

By Ken Marlborough If you have a friend or relative’s birthday coming up and you don’t quite know what to give her, flowers could be a good idea. If you can’t choose the flowers, leave it to a florist, he will ask you questions about the birthday girl and select the flowers accordingly. Besides sending on beautiful flowers, florists’ websites also send fruit baskets and personal care items as birthday gifts. If you’ve decided on flowers, you can choose flowers specific for her birth month. If her birthday is in January, send her carnations; in February, violets; March, jonquils; April, sweet peas; May, lilies; June, roses; July, larkspurs; August, gladioli; September, asters; October, calendulas; November, chrysanthemums; and December, narcissuses. For younger women and girls, your flower arrangements could be based on a flower theme for her birthday party. You could create large paper blooms, perhaps of sunflowers, and do up T-shirts with flowers in thumbprint designs and get them to carry cake and confectionery bouquets. Begin with the party invitations and design them in the shape of large flowers with each petal bearing all the details of your party. Make these cards with a sheet of card paper from which you will need to cut four-inch long petals. Now, cut a 1.5-inch diameter circle from the remaining sheet. In each petal, punch two holes, one in the center and the other at the narrow end. Pile up all the petals and cover them with the circle, ensuring that the holes are in line with each other and stick them together with tape. Open each flower and write the details of your party on each petal. Flower Arrangements provides detailed information about flower arrangements, Christmas flower arrangements, dried flower arrangements, and more. Supersizing America

By Virginia Bola, PsyD For some of us, food is warmth and love. We associate it with home and childhood: tempting smells that greeted us after school on a cold December afternoon. The kitchen served as the center of the house under the kindly direction of the Captain in the apron. If we were good, we might be allowed to stir the pot. If we were very good, we got to clean out the mixing bowl. As we grew up, we found wonders elsewhere: the coffee shops and diners where adolescents gathered and food was only a platform for the real business of talking, bonding, and flirting. We drank cola and root beer and discovered sundaes, pizza and french fries. But real food was what we ate at home. Later, we moved on to the pale imitation of food represented by college cafeterias and underground cafes that were heavy on music and political rebellion and light on the menu. We returned home for the holidays and again ate real food, as good as we remembered. Some of us moved on to the non-food of C rations and swore we’d never enjoy eating again. We moved into the world of work: automats and deli lunches or expense-account steak and martinis where even the most exquisite fare took a back seat to table discussions. We married, moved into new homes, rediscovered the warmth and intimacy of a family kitchen and embraced the delights of gourmet cooking, homemade bread, and nouvelle cuisine. At the same time, just below our level of awareness, the fast food industry started to blossom into the billion dollar gorilla it is today. At first, it was small hamburgers and hot dogs with french fries and a drink. At first, it was an occasional visit to “get mom out of the kitchen.” At first, it was just something fast that avoided interruptions in our race to the top. The menus expanded to encourage more frequent visits. Drive-Thrus that sat closed and empty until noon suddenly discovered how to make breakfast items that could be eaten at the wheel. Chicken, fish, and ribs were added, soon followed by Mexican specialties, baked potatoes, fried vegetables, and sandwiches. The burgers got bigger and so did we. Somewhere, a brilliant light bulb exploded in an ad man’s brain and “Super-Size” was born. If a burger was good, why not make it bigger for just a little more money? If fries are the staff of life for American teenagers, why not make the portions bigger? Why not make the best purchase value a whole meal, combining everything the customer wants (and maybe something they don’t)? Why not Super-Size the whole meal and really make money? Rather than an occasional change-of-pace, the Drive-Thru gradually assumed a predominant place in our diets. Astute marketers targeted their sales pitches to the most responsive and easily manipulated niche of the population: children. Tired, time-strapped parents yielded to tearful pleas to visit Ronald or Jack. And our children grew fat. Teenagers, with their deep-seated psychological preference to live in their cars existed on a diet made up, almost exclusively, of fast food, turning up their noses at the thought of a home-cooked meal. Active and full of energy, they ignored the almost imperceptible puffiness that their intake triggered. What was there to worry about? The Drive-Thrus were a gift from heaven: tasty food, fast access, car-proof containers, cheap satiation. Then we woke up. We looked at a world where even the average individual was clearly overweight and more than a third of us were obese, even our children. In a culture obsessed with the appearance of being thin, we were become permanently, indisputably, fat. The few earlier voices of criticism increased to a low roar. The tasty creations of yesterday became the now-maligned culprits of our condition. To keep the money-machine viable, the fast food moguls adapted to the cries for change: the oil used for frying was trumpeted as unsaturated, salads appeared on menus, substitute sides for french fries became available, and “Super-Size it?” was no longer the order taker’s standard refrain. The industry breathed a sigh of relief seeing that a few changes made everything all right and the world could return to its infatuation with the Drive-Thru. We beamed with a sense of satisfaction that we had prodded the market in a healthier direction. Then we noticed that we were still fat. Where had we gone wrong? Well, the “small” burgers were still big: two to three times the size of their relatives of forty years ago. The salads were healthy until drenched with several hundred calories of creamy dressing. To maintain the taste we had come to love, toppings were added: more kinds of cheese, butter, relishes and dipping sauces. And everything was still primarily fried: breakfast, burgers, chicken, potatoes. Even high quality, frequently-changed deep fry oil is loaded with calories to be deposited on our waistlines, hips, and internal organs. Fast food has taken us out of the kitchen into a world where the demand for productivity makes us work harder and longer and steals away any notion of spare time. We run to keep pace with a society spinning ever faster and we eat on the run because to pause is to fail. Is there no escape? This is the Twenty-first Century — returning to the food regimes of fifty or a hundred years ago is improbable. The old fashioned “made from scratch” meals require too much time and effort, except for special occasions, in our fast-paced, two-working-parents, long-work-and-commute lives. What we can do, if we seek to withdraw from the enormous herd of heavyweights, is to remember that the way to health, slenderness, delayed aging, and increased longevity has been demonstrated repetitively by our little friend, the laboratory rat. The secret is consistent, prolonged, cheat-proofed, under-eating. Once that core concept has been adopted, and completely internalized, the pathway to a new, thin you becomes clear: eat whatever you want but a LOT LESS. We’re not looking at the old adage of “eat moderately and move around a lot” because we know, from experience, that it doesn’t work. When I say a “lot less” I mean it. You may be eating three times a day, plus snacks. Cutting out a snack here or a dessert there may eventually help you lose weight - if you have twenty years to invest in the attempt. Don’t “cut back.” Slash, sever, pulverize your portions. If you eat three meals a day, change to eating just one. If you like to graze on six mini-meals or snacks, cut to two. Reducing your overall intake by two thirds should bring you into the zone of your actual daily needs. Yes, it would be nice if you opted to make those reduced calories all highly nutritious but we all know that you are going to eat what you are going to eat, no matter how much the health gurus nag you. So go ahead and eat what you intend, just one third of your usual rations. To keep your energy on an even keel, you can spread your one meal throughout the day. If your usual lunch is a cheeseburger, fries, and a shake, split it up: a shake for breakfast, a burger for lunch, a dinner of fries and a slice of cheese. Are you then on a diet? Are you using your precious time on specialty shopping and food preparation? Do you have to think about what menu items fit into your prescribed weight plan? No, none of these apply. You are simply eating the way you have always done except one day of your prior food plan now last three days. If you’re worried about your health, take a multivitamin (funny, you weren’t worried about your health on the same fare in the past, were you?) If you are a tall, large-boned individual or you feel (genuinely and persistently) faint, take a canned nutritional booster like Ensure. It is almost too simple and too easy IF you have really internalized the concept of under-eating and have adopted a “can do,will do,” attitude - the key to everything. P. S. You’ll save a lot of money too! Virginia Bola is a licensed psychologist and an admitted diet fanatic. An Interesting Look at the Cuban Cigar

By Eddie Tobey Even most non-cigar smokers have heard some of the lore surrounding the Cuban cigar. Long revered as the finest and best tasting brands in the world, they have traditionally been extremely difficult to procure. Consequently there exists a very profitable market for importing and distributing Cuban cigars to cigar-lovers worldwide. There are many brands of Cuban cigars available, but some of the most well known include Coronas Especiales (rumored to be one of Fidel Castros favorites) and Montecristos. Many people assume that the distribution of Cuban cigars on U.S. soil is illegal. The truth of the matter is, although there are certain restrictions placed on the importing of cigars from Cuba, there is no outright law forbidding their presence. Recently the Department of Justice altered the original embargo on Cuban products, allowing limited amounts of cigars to be brought back from licensed trips to Cuba. That law has since been expanded to include personal quantities, up to two boxes, for personal use. Although there is actually no law governing the importation of Cuban cigars for personal use, large business have been fined, at times, for the selling or distributing of large volumes of Cuban cigars to the pubic. Fines are a rare occurrence, however. Many private settings that sell Cuban cigars, such as hotels or casinos, have experienced little or no problems over the years. In recent years there has been a growing black market for fake Cuban cigars. Most of the time, they are easy to spot because of their poor quality and appearance, but occasionally there have been Cuban imitations that are more difficult to regulate. The only way to ensure the quality and authenticity of a purchase is to take proper care to go to a reputable, reliable dealer of Cuban cigar products. For any concerned individuals who hope to purchase Cuban cigars, but are worried about legal ramifications, there is little cause for concern. Purchasing Cuban cigars for private, non-commercial use has been going on for years among the most high-profile cigar aficionados, including politicians and movie stars. Discover 3 Natural Remedies For Morning Sickness

By David Silva Here’s an estimate that might shock you: as many as 80% of pregnant women experience morning sickness or some form of nausea during their pregnancy. Fortunately, the morning sickness doesn’t last throughout the entire pregnancy. It tends to peak around the 9th week and disappear around the 20th week. Unfortunately, nearly three months of battling nausea can be tough on anyone. Because of concerns for the baby, more and more women are turning to natural remedies for their morning sickness. However, even natural remedies require caution. For instance, the three most common natural remedies for morning sickness are ginger tea, acupressure wristbands, and peppermint oil. Yet these remedies can cause mild adverse reactions such as skin irritation due to the wristbands or the intolerable taste of the ginger. You do have other choices, however. Here’s a short list of steps you can take immediately to help relieve your morning sickness - Eat frequent, smaller meals so you never feel too hungry or too full. - Avoid fried or fatty foods. - Eat crackers, bread, toast, cereal and other bland foods throughout the day. Eat something from this list before you get out of bed in the morning. - Drink plenty of fluids, especially between meals. - Keep a record of your activities and the foods you eat in order to identify what tends to trigger your nausea. If these steps aren’t helpful, then you might want to consider trying one of natural remedies listed above. Let’s take a closer look at these … Acupuncture A very small percentage of pregnant women experience hyperemesis gravidarium, which is a severe form of morning sickness that can result in weight loss, dehydration, and potentially hospitalization. Several studies have demonstrated that regular, several-times-a-day acupuncture sessions can be helpful in minimizing this form of nausea and vomiting. In addition, acupuncture wrist bands (also known as sea bands) that stimulate the pericardium (p6) acupuncture point can be effective. The wrist band consists of a plastic button that applies pressure on the p6 point inside the wrist. This is a form of traditional Chinese medicine used to relieve nausea, and it generally works immediately. You can find an acupuncture wrist band online or at your local health food store. They’re generally reasonably priced. Ginger Ginger is a popular natural remedy for morning sickness. It’s been used for this purpose for centuries, and after numerous medical trials, is generally recognized as safe. However, ginger does contain substances that can potentially cause birth defects. For this reason, taking higher doses (over 500 mg) during pregnancy is generally unadvisable. In addition, there are concerns that ginger can prolong bleeding time and interfere with platelet aggregation, though studies focused on the first trimester found no notable difference in the number or miscarriages, stillbirths and malformations. Ginger is commonly taken in hot water as a tea. It can also be consumed as ginger soda, gingersnaps or in capsule form. Peppermint Essential Oil Nausea can be minimized by using the aroma of peppermint. It’s relatively easy to create your own peppermint aroma bowl. Fill a large bowl with hot water, add two drops of peppermint essential oil, and you’re all set. Keep the bowl on a nightstand near where you sleep and see if it doesn’t help. As with any medical treatment or natural remedy, always consult with your physician first. Some natural remedies can work against medications, others can have hidden side effects that your physician can caution you about. Sorcerer-Pope to Bewitch Europe and Mislead the Masses!

By David Ben-Ariel Watch for the pagan sorcerer-pope to start performing many supernatural deeds, counterfeit miracles, to mislead the masses and get them eating out of his hand to support the Vatican’s elect to “defend” Europe and “Western Christian Civilization” and murder any who oppose them. Daniel 11:36 The King Who Exalts Himself 36 “The king will do as he pleases. He will exalt and magnify himself above every god and will say unheard-of things against the God of gods. He will be successful until the time of wrath is completed, for what has been determined must take place. (Antiochus Epiphanes - “god in the flesh” - was only a type of the unholy Terror about to be unleashed). Acts 8:9-11 Simon the Sorcerer 9 Now for some time a man named Simon had practiced sorcery in the city and amazed all the people of Samaria. He boasted that he was someone great, 10and all the people, both high and low, gave him their attention and exclaimed, “This man is the divine power known as the Great Power.” 11They followed him because he had amazed them for a long time with his magic. 2 Thessalonians 2:7-12 7 For the secret power of lawlessness is already at work; but the one who now holds it back will continue to do so till he is taken out of the way. 8And then the lawless one will be revealed, whom the Lord Jesus will overthrow with the breath of his mouth and destroy by the splendor of his coming. 9The coming of the lawless one will be in accordance with the work of Satan displayed in all kinds of counterfeit miracles, signs and wonders, 10and in every sort of evil that deceives those who are perishing. They perish because they refused to love the truth and so be saved. 11For this reason God sends them a powerful delusion so that they will believe the lie 12and so that all will be condemned who have not believed the truth but have delighted in wickedness. Revelation 13:13-17 13 And he performed great and miraculous signs, even causing fire to come down from heaven to earth in full view of men. 14Because of the signs he was given power to do on behalf of the first beast, he deceived the inhabitants of the earth. He ordered them to set up an image in honor of the beast who was wounded by the sword (final revival of the unholy Roman Empire of the German Nation) and yet lived. 15He was given power to give breath to the image of the first beast (imperial restoration), so that it could speak and cause all who refused to worship the image to be killed. 16He also forced everyone, small and great, rich and poor, free and slave, to receive a mark on his right hand or on his forehead, 17so that no one could buy or sell unless he had the mark, which is the name of the beast or the number of his name. Biblical prophecy announces that the European Union will morph into a bloodthirsty BEAST, a politico-ECONOMIC superpower under the evil influences of the Vatican who will seduce it with satanic offers of all the kingdoms of this world and great riches in exchange for enforcing their idolatrous traditions, especially SUNDAY WORSHIP. Watch for the pope and his “man of the hour” to storm the world stage, to put on a command performance, Satan at his best; the darkest before Dawn prophecies being fulfilled before our very eyes culminating with the real Jesus Christ’s return from Heaven to make the diabolical duo history! Growing Hybrid Grapes

By Jim Bruce Growing hybrid grapes is becoming more popular for wine and eating. This popularity comes from the fact that hybrid grapes can be grown in areas where the traditional European grapes cannot survive. It also comes about because more and more people are growing grapes in their backyard to produce their own vintage wine. What are hybrid grapes? To answer this question, we must look back in history about 100 years to when the European vineyards were being decimated by the phylloxera louse that had been brought from North America. The European grape species, Vitis vinifera, is extremely susceptible to this louse. Vineyard after vineyard was succumbing to this imported pest as well as to grape diseases that had also come from America. But Native American species of grapes had evolved with the pest and were resistant to its attacks on the vine’s roots. In an effort to save the wine industry in France, some individuals began to cross breed the European and American species to obtain new varieties that had the wine characteristics of the European grapes and the resistance to the phylloxera louse and other diseases that the American grape species possessed. It is from these breeding programs that the original hybrid grapes were grown. At first, the grape varieties produced were no better than their American parents. But as time has gone on, more complex hybrids have been made and the quality of the grapes has increased. Today, wines made from some hybrid grape varieties even rival the wines made in California and other traditional wine producing areas. The way you grow hybrid grapes depends upon the varieties you choose. Some varieties’ growth habit resemble their American parents while others grow like their European parents. And then there are those that are in-between in their growth habit. The growth habit of the variety will dictate what type of trellising system you will use to grow them. It also will dictate how the vines are pruned. European varieties and hybrids that take after them tend to grow upright. These varieties will need a vertical shoot positioning trellis system that allows you to tie up the shoots as they grow upward. American varieties and hybrids that resemble them have a growth habit that droops. These vines are usually trained to a high wire about six feet off the ground and the shoots are allowed to grow downward over the growing season. You can find a hybrid variety that will grow in almost anywhere in the United States. Alaska is about the only state you won’t find one adapted to. The right hybrid grape variety for your location is dependent upon the percentage of native species found in the cross. Varieties adapted to northern locations tend to have a high percentage of the native Vitis riparia that lives in areas where the winters can go as low as -35F. Southern varieties generally have Vitis aestivalis in their background if from the southeast or other native species if found in areas like Texas. Grape hybrids often are known by only the breeder’s number. They may be called S.V 5-276 or S. 7053. Only the best of hybrids have a true name, such as Foch or Seyval. These named varieties have shown their worth over many years and are usually being used to make wines commercially where a name is important on the label. Growing hybrid grapes may mean having to deviate from the traditional grape growing methods. Some grape hybrids produce way too much fruit because of hybrid vigor. You will have to remove some of the fruit early in the growing season to prevent them from over-bearing and succumbing to premature death. Each variety will behave slightly different. You will have to get to know the grape varieties you grow and adjust accordingly. The big question is which varieties to grow? The answer to this depends on where you live. You must buy varieties that are adapted to your region. Some hybrid grape varieties mature their fruit in 135-140 days while others need 170 days or more to get ripe. The goal is to have ripe fruit so be sure that you’re not growing a long season variety in a short season. Hybrid grapes also vary in how winter hardy they are. Make sure that you get a very hardy variety if you live where the winters are cold. Or a southern adapted variety if you live where there’s hot humid summers and long growing seasons. Winter hardiness is not the concern under those conditions. What you are going to use the fruit for is also a concern when picking the right variety. Most hybrids have been developed to make wine. But there are varieties for eating too. Most of the grape varieties that you buy locally at a greenhouse or nursery are eating varieties. You will need to go online to find wine varieties for sale. If you’re passion is to grow grape vines in your backyard either for wine or eating, I suggest that you look into hybrid grapes. These have been bred to get the best of the tastes of the European grapes combined with the resistances and winter hardiness of the native grape species. Whatever your growing conditions are, you’ll find a hybrid grape variety that is adapted to your area and needs. Jim Bruce has been growing grapes since 1974.
